In view of the Paris 2024 Games, Charline Picon had to change category. The French, double Olympic medalist, confides in this new adventure.

She was one of the medalists at the Tokyo Olympics last summer. Like five years earlier in Rio de Janeiro, Charline Picon left with a charm around her neck. Well, this time, it was not sacred like in Brazil, but the Frenchwoman came back from Japan silver trimmed in windsurfing RS: X. A category withdrawn by the International Sailing Federation for the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

A radical change for Paris 2024

So, to play the Games at home, Charline Picon made the radical choice of switch to 49er FX dinghy to prepare for the events for the French Summer Games which will take place off the coast of Marseille. And, for the moment, things are going well for the Frenchwoman who now has a teammate, Sarah Steyaert (crowned laser radial world champion in 2008 and 5th at the Beijing Summer Games the same year). “The beginnings are encouraging,” says Charline Picon in Le Télégramme. From my first sailing, Sarah was surprised by my ability to adjust the spinnaker for someone who had never set foot on such a boat. But yes, technically, it’s starting from scratch. “

For the 37-year-old, the 49er FX is “really unstable”. “I didn’t realize it when I chose it, I hadn’t tried it before,” admits Picon. Afterwards, my job is physical and it suits me well. I have a little work to do to gain a little weight, so that we are in the nails at the level of the crew. The opposite of what I have always done for 20 years, namely controlling everything I ate ”.

Picon: “If I manage to succeed in this challenge, it will be really madness for me”

Playing the Olympic Games in Paris was impossible to miss for the Frenchwoman. “I don’t know if we would have tried the adventure if it hadn’t been in Paris. The first idea was born in 2019 in Vilamoura. I had plugged Sarah on the subject and, after Rio, she had left the door open to Paris 2024, knowing that she was cutting for Tokyo. Imagine the Olympics in France a little, you say to yourself: “Ah yes anyway! If I can live them as an athlete, it would be crazy!” If the 49er project goes to the end, if it goes to the Games , I don’t know if I’ll get over it. If I manage to succeed in this challenge, it will be really madness for me to succeed in this change of support, ”says the sailing champion.
