The photos show, among other things, director James Cameron on set, overseeing various aquatic scenes. You can also get a glimpse of the filming of an underwater sequence, as well as a Pandora beach, which looks like a postcard.

As part of this new look at Avatar 2, the magazine took the time to discuss the challenges with Cameron and producer Jon Landau, but especially the deeply ambitious nature of the filming of the feature film, which is still due for release on December 16, 2022.

“It’s a bit crazy, the process. I mean, if Avatar hadn’t made so much money, we would never do that, because it’s a bit crazy, ”the Canadian filmmaker shared with a laugh.

Like Avatar 2 and 3 take place mainly in and around water, James Cameron notably built a huge water tank of more than 3.4 million liters. The film crew also had to adapt their motion capture technology to make it work and be accurate underwater.

On the distribution side, the actors also had to practice diving, especially without oxygen. And if Sigourney weaver, back for the rest ofAvatar, managed to hold his breath “easily” for six and a half minutes, the palm would go to Kate winslet, who “blew everyone away when she took a seven-and-a-half-minute apnea,” the filmmaker recalled.

A family affair

The story ofAvatar 2 is set to take place around 14 years after the first installment and will follow Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), who started a family on Pandora. Their young children should also play an important role in the story.

“Ultimately, the suites tell a story about family and all that parents are going to do to keep the family together and safe. I’ve always said that Jim’s films have universal themes and, really, there is no more universal theme than family, ”said producer Jon Landau.

Avatar 2, which began filming in 2017, is due out on December 16, 2022. Three other sequels are already confirmed: Avatar 3, which will be released on December 20, 2024, Avatar 4, in December 2026, and Avatar 5, in December 2028.

Certainly fans of the franchise will have several opportunities to hit theaters over the next decade.
