End of the adventure in Dortmund for Axel Witsel? – All football

While Axel Witsel has had a more difficult season than expected since his return from injury, Borussia Dortmund have decided not to extend his contract.

Axel Witsel imagined his start to 2022 differently: indisputable holder since the start of the season after a race against time which had allowed him to compete in Euro 2020 on the buzzer, the Red Devil had to settle for two small upswings in the last two meetings of Bundesliga. At the beginning of December, he was already on the bench for two consecutive games, and the season of Wissel remains less brilliant than expected, Marcus Röse offering a direct game that does not really match his qualities.

This week, Wissel was established in DFB Pokal, against Sankt Pauli … and the Borussia Dortmund was eliminated, with a self-goal from the Belgian. Not ideal for regaining confidence and according to BILD, this confidence is broken on the Borussia side anyway: the club has already decided not to extend the contract ofAxel Witsel, which ends next June. The black and yellow would even be quite “relieved” to get rid of one of the club’s highest salaries (7 million annually), writes the German daily.

No departure this winter

If a departure from this winter transfer window has been mentioned by certain German sources, this should not however happen. The versatility of Wissel (who even started the season as a central defender) and his professionalism are unchallenged, and the player himself has no interest in leaving. Next summer, on the other hand, he will be one of the “big fish” free to engage wherever they wish…
