With Legacy Of Thieves Collection, Uncharted 4 is back six years later in a PS5 version

Six years ago, Uncharted 4: A Thief End put a magnificent end to one of the most emblematic sagas of the Naughty Dog studio and the Playstation brand. Landing on PS3 in 2007, the series quickly established itself as one of the most beloved franchises by critics and gamers around the world. Featuring a handsome and intrepid treasure hunter, at the crossroads between John McClane and Indiana Jones, the latest installment of the adventures of Nathan Drake returns in a re-adapted version on PS5 just a few weeks before the adaptation of his adventures on big screen, long remained at the Arles stadium. If A Thief End was unanimous when it was released, many first party titles have followed suit to push the limits ever further. What remains of this fourth adventure six years later? Does Uncharted 4 still manage to impress in this Playstation 5 version? Here we go again for a treasure hunt which we hope will not be the last.

This time is the last?!

For this 4th installment of the series, Neil Druckmann the screenwriter of The Last Of Us took on much more importance in the writing instead of or because of the departure of Amy Hennig, writing the first episodes. We find a Nathan Drake who has matured, put away from his life as a thief / adventurer and living with Elena with whom he is now married. Both live a seemingly peaceful existence after the exceptional adventures they have experienced. In reality, Nathan is lying to himself, he misses the adrenaline and it is the return of his older brother Sam who will quickly take him for a last stand in his company to touch their old dream, find pirate Henry Avery’s treasure.

Although the appearance of a brother of Drake flirts a little with scriptwriting ease, the narration has never been so present and pleasant as in this opus. The dialogues are tasty and we take great pleasure in following this last adventure as the affect that binds us to the characters of the saga is strong. Connoisseurs of the series will revel in the references to old episodes and the relationship between Nate and his wife is rendered with great accuracy, without ever overdoing it!

A formula that still works, with a few additions

In Uncharted, the gameplay has never been stronger than the rhythm of the adventure which is similar to a real rollercoaster from which it is very difficult to get off. “Come on, let’s continue for another half hour” will be the sentence you will say most often when you feel the urge to interrupt your games.

Still going strong in its unfolding, A Thief End has moments of anthology in store for you as only this license is capable of offering the player. If some are perhaps less impactful than before, the fault of a formula whose regulars will anticipate the surprises, others outright surpass them by their intensity which is part of longer times than in the past.

On the gameplay side, the TPS phases are still as effective with the possibility of camouflage in the vegetation. This stealth aspect is unfortunately counterbalanced by the “one man army” side of Drake who unfortunately cannot neutralize his enemies in a non-lethal way, it’s still a shame.

In terms of novelty, a breath of fresh air blew on exploration when the game was released thanks to the addition of a grappling hook and a pick acting as an ice ax during the climbing phases. Added to this are slides to control and a few exploration phases in very successful semi-open environments. You will be able to use vehicles such as the jeep or the boat which have been very well integrated into the formula of the title of Naughty Dog.

In 2016, you didn’t need to be an expert to say that the 4th episode of the saga was magnificent. Under the Madagascan sun or in the middle of a storm, the technicians of Naughty Dog had literally destroyed themselves so that it was a real visual treat. In six years, many titles have appeared and it is certain that Uncharted 4 was ahead of its time, like its predecessors before it. The sharpness of the image was one of the great strengths of the game, on Playstation 5 the title is still as sumptuous, well helped by a phenomenal artistic direction which sublimates the sets of the adventure. The vegetation has a very successful organic side, only certain facial expressions have been surpassed by The Last Of Us Part II, the sequel to the other Naughty Dog series released at the end of the previous generation.

49.99€ will allow you to acquire this Legacy of Thieves Collection gathering Uncharted 4 without its multiplayer mode as well as its DLC Stand Alone The Lost Legacy. For owners of the physical or digital versions, only €10.00 can upgrade your game, which given the advantages offered is far from being a scam if you hadn’t played the title since 2016.

In this new version, the title offers 3 graphic modes. One in native 4K at 30 FPS, one in upscaled 4K at 60 frames per second and one in 120 FPS in Full HD. In terms of results, the upscaled 4K performance mode offers the best results.

PS5 obliges, the title takes advantage of some advantages offered by the Dual Sense while remaining quite disappointing. Apart from the adaptive triggers, nothing really crisp is to be put in your mouth with discreet haptic feedback. On the loading side, the PS5 SSD does the job, the title is ultra-fast from the console menu to the game and the loadings are non-existent. It’s all good.

Finally, the collection incorporates 3D audio for better immersion, but I was not

A must have

Six years later, Uncharted 4 has lost none of the qualities that made it one of the best games on the PS4. The completely mastered formula has progressed in its narration and in its balance, making it the best part of the saga. It’s a must for fans even if some gossips could finally blame it for being a title bordering on an interactive film in which we ultimately play very little.

For me, it’s a PS4 monument that stands well above most of the AAA triples released after it. It’s a blockbuster as it is fun to play a few times a year. Not essential in itself, this PS5 version pays homage to it with a small technical addition allowing it to easily pass the six years that separate it from its initial release. If you’ve never done it, jump on it. It’s the Uncharted formula that made Sony’s AAA what it is today. This is proof of its impact.
