You can now become a guide-boatman in the Gouffre de Padirac!

The Gouffre de Padirac, its singular landscapes and its unforgettable underground adventure… This exceptional place is in full recruitment period for its summer season, which should begin on April 1st when the site opens, located at heart of the Dordogne valley, in the Lot. And what the abyss is looking for above all at the moment are new boat guides! The very people who are responsible for bringing visitors to life in the place underground, 103 meters deep. There are still a few days left for those who would be tempted by the adventure to apply, reports the site in a press release dated February 2.

At Padirac chasm, not far from Rocamadour, it is the guide-boatman who leads the guided tours by boat (which can hold up to 11 people), by rowing. The crossing of the underground river traditionally lasts about ten minutes, over 500 meters. The chasm teams point out that if some guides are trained lecturers or geologists, these are not necessarily necessary elements for hiring. The place is above all looking for sociable, sporty and enthusiastic candidates, who wish to learn, but also to pass on their knowledge.

History and geology courses in the training program

Interested candidates can apply directly on the Gouffre de Padirac website. Once selected, they will have to follow a four-week training course, in particular to learn the art of rowing, the mastery of which is necessary to ensure a good visit to this natural cavity measuring 33 meters in diameter. Future boat-guides will also follow several modules ofstory about the sinkhole itselfbut also geology courses.

According to the press release, the Gouffre de Padirac has already attracted more than 26 million visitors so far, and remains the third most visited site in the Occitanie region. In 2019, before the pandemic, a record number of 503,000 tourists visited the sinkhole. There is no doubt that the abyss hopes to do better this year, while the tourism sector has been suffering for two years, due to the Covid-19. According to a ranking of the TripAdvisor platformFrance is part of its ranking of the most popular destinations for 2022, including the Paris region and Corsica.
